Revelstoke, BC, Canada

About My City: Revelstoke

Serving a population of approximately 8000, Revelstoke BC is a small community, nestled inn the heart of the Columbia Mountains about half way between Vancouver and Calgary. The city has a vibrant historical component, abundant recreation opportunities and a diverse economic base. Revelstoke is a designated resort municipality, with both summer and winter tourism increasing annually. With strong support for early childhood development, youth, newcomers and seniors, Revelstoke is a great place to raise a family. Affordable housing, food security and the rising cost of living are top social priorities.

About My Organization: Revelstoke Poverty Reduction Working Group

The Revelstoke Community Development Committee is a committee of the City Council of Revelstoke. It is comprised of community social sector professionals, business representatives, community members and City councillors. The committee will contribute to achieving the Community Vision by supporting all citizens through a responsible and caring social system. An annual Work Plan is developed to guide the committee on priority actions.

My Collaborative:

Due to Revelstoke increasingly becoming a ‘resort community’, rising costs of living have become a major issue for residents. In 2011, frontline workers and community partners stressed to the municipality, that the cost of living has been a major issue for their clients and service users; there was concern that people were leaving the community because they could not afford to live there. A strategy was created with the goal of understanding what more the municipality and community partners could do at a local level to reduce poverty.
