About My Organization: The Social Planning Action Network (SPAN) Nelson

SPAN Nelson (Social Planning Action Network) strengthens the community by providing collaborative, action-oriented leadership in building a caring, inclusive, dignified and socially just community.

My Collaborative: Nelson at its Best

The initiative began in 2013 with a survey developed by the Social Planning Action Network Society. The community survey identified poverty as one of the top three priorities. With the conviction that poverty is a complex issue that cannot be solved by one agency or sector alone, SPAN put together a multi-sectoral Steering Committee to host community conversations and develop a poverty reduction plan that envisioned a better Nelson by 2025. The poverty reduction strategy is currently being drafted with involvement of the local community. 30 community conversations were carried out with a range of community members and stakeholders. These conversations focused on identifying Nelson’s strengths, visioning what the city could look like in 2025, and beginning to ascertain the practical steps that will take us there.
