About My City: Huron County
Huron County, Ontario's West Coast, is located along the shores of Lake Huron. This vibrant, rural community is the most agriculturally productive county in Ontario, and is a leader in numerous areas of agricultural technology and innovation. We have a population of 60,000 people.
About My Organization: Huron County Health Unit
Huron County has been a member of VC since 2013. The Huron County Health Unit staff work to promote and protect health and prevent disease, illness and injury in the residents of Huron County. We offer public health services that meet our needs in Huron County.
My Collaborative: Poverty to Prosperity in Huron County
In April 2013 the Committee known as “Bridges in Huron” and later the “Huron Anti-Poverty Initiative” started to lay the foundation for a community response to poverty in Huron County. In 2014 the initiative became “Poverty to Prosperity in Huron” and an action plan was created to guide their collective work to eliminate poverty in Huron. 32 partner organizations belong to the initiative.
There is no formal governance structure, other than being a member driven cooperative, supported by the backbone organization. The initiative has no core funding. Currently, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Perth Huron United Way have provided project funding. In the past, the initiative has received funds from: County of Huron Social Services, Perth Huron United Way and the Huron County Health Unit.
Our priority areas are: income insecurity – living wage, poverty report; housing insecurity – our housing and homelessness committee has an action plan with 10 goals; food insecurity – 10 food banks (and the Huron County Food Distribution Centre) working together in Huron; and transportation – Huron Perth United Way is lead on transportation.
