About My City: Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes

The City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County are neighboring municipalities in central Ontario with a combined population of 90,200. Kawartha Lakes is a single tier municipality, formed in 2001 as a result of the amalgamation of 16 lower tier municipalities that made up the former Victoria County, with a population of 73,214 (2011 Census). The Haliburton County is an upper tier municipality, comprised of four lower tier municipalities, with a total population of 17,026 (2011 Census). With a combined area of over 7,000 km2, both municipalities are largely rural and remote. There is also a large seasonal population (approximately 50,000 combined) due to the abundance of cottages and recreational opportunities among the hundreds of local lakes and waterways and numerous provincial parks. The City of Kawartha Lakes is the provincially designated Service Manager for both Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County for the delivery of Ontario Works (Social Assistance), Children’s Services and Housing Services. The City and County share a number of service providers including public education, public health and a other human services sector agencies.

About My Organization: City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County

In 2011 the City of Kawartha Lakes and County of Haliburton, at the request of a number of community agencies, began the development of a Poverty Reduction Strategy. Over the next several years, a Steering Committee comprised of community agencies and municipal Councillors and staff led the development of a number of reports, including five theme-based Action Plans (Children and Youth; Employment & Education; Food Security; Housing; and Transportation). A total of 50 recommendations included in the five Action Plans were endorsed by both City and County Councils. The local Poverty Reduction Roundtable was established in the summer of 2016 to develop specific initiatives and implementation plans for the recommendations.

My Collaborative: Haliburton - Kawartha Lakes Poverty Reduction Roundtable

Established in summer of 2016, the primary objective of the Roundtable is the implementation of the recommendations of the City of Kawartha Lakes and County of Haliburton Poverty Reduction Strategy Action Plans. The Roundtable shall also champion initiatives, programs and services that will reduce the prevalence of poverty or reduce the impact of poverty for all residents of the City of Kawartha Lakes and County of Haliburton.
