The Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction, Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, and Hamilton Public Health Services have jointly released a resource aimed at facilitating Ontario high school teachers to teach about income disparity.  The resource meets learning outcomes for Civics Grade 10 and Religion Grade 9 of the public and catholic curriculums. It is also useful for community groups to gain an understanding of income disparity in Hamilton, and for future secondary school courses to be built on.

The resource includes:

  • A teacher backgrounder on income disparity
  • Lesson plans and activities
  • Examples of charitable and social justice activities for students and schools
  • Further resources for teachers and students
The goals are to:
  • To enhance understanding of the broad impacts of income disparity on individuals and communities
  • To demonstrate income disparity as a product of larger systems
  • To foster empathy and a sense of justice regarding income disparity
  • To empower students to take action
