A Guide to Social Return on Investment

A Guide to Social Return on Investment aims to show organisations and institutions to make better decisions using Social Return on Investment (SROI) principles, helping them to recognise value beyond what can be easily captured by financial measurement.  It offers a framework for measuring and accounting for a much broader concept of value; it seeks to reduce inequality and environmental degradation and improve wellbeing by incorporating social, environmental and economic costs and benefits.

The lead partner in developing The Guide is nef (the new economics foundation) in the U.K. who was founded in 1986.  They describe themselves as “an independent think-and-do tank that inspires and demonstrates real economic well-being.”  They do this by “combining rigorous analysis and policy debate with practical solutions on the ground, often run and designed with the help of local people. We also create new ways of measuring progress towards increased well-being and environmental sustainability.”
