Reflecting on Reducing Poverty in NWT in 2012

2012 was another busy year for Alternatives North.  Our volunteer organization carried out a range of advocacy activities in support of social, environmental and democratic justice.  Major areas of activity included:

·       Participation in development of an Anti-Poverty Strategy

·       Participation in the regulatory review of the Giant Mine Remediation Project, and efforts to establish independent    oversight and a perpetual care plan for the mine

·       Staging the only Yellowknife municipal election forum including all Council and Mayoral candidates

·       Involvement in the October Northern Governance and Economy Conference

·       Commentary on GNWT budget preparation and policy

·       Advocacy in reaction to federal changes to the environmental management regime

·       Participation in the development of improved Early Childhood Development programs and policies

·       Advocacy for maintaining and improving the public health care system

·       Efforts to review and improve Food Security
