Alternatives North

Alternatives North is looking for a contractor who will continue the work

started on the living wage campaign. Funding is in place until March 31,

2016. The contract price is $50 per hour and the schedule calls for a

commitment of 10 hours per week (there's some flexibility in this). The work

is overseen by a steering committee.

Duties of the contractor will include the following:

1.      The contractor will increase community awareness of the living wage

and research the costs and benefits of implementing it. The co-ordinator

will also identify and work with prospective employers to be leaders in

adopting the living wage.

2.      The contractor will expand and strengthen the No Place for Poverty

coalition by persuading new members from all sectors to support a common

cause; no one who is working full-time should be living in poverty.

3.      Living Wage campaigns are inherently local. The target group for the

living wage in Yellowknife includes the existing No Place for Poverty

Coalition members (31 entities), businesses, municipal government,

non-profits, faith communities, unions, and most importantly, people with

lived experience of poverty who would benefit from being paid a living wage.

This campaign, if successful could be replicated in other NWT communities.

The contractor will create awareness of the living wage as a community

responsibility by:

a.      creating and implementing a communications plan

b.      increasing community engagement with a public education event

featuring a knowledgeable guest speaker

c.       appearing at conferences and trade shows to explain and promote the

concept of a living wage.

Identify at least one large employer to adopt the living wage:

a.      research early adopters of living wage in other jurisdictions

b.      meet with key decision maker(s) of potential living wage employers

to explain benefits

c.       develop a recognition plan for living wage employers

Prepare a year-end activity report template that will be sent along with

financial reporting to meet GNWT contribution agreement requirements.

If you have any interest in this opportunity, please call me at the number

below.  The deadline for Expression of Interest is September 22nd at 5:00pm (MT)
