NWT joins 7 provinces, Yukon and Nunavut in reducing poverty

This week Premier Bob McLeod made big commitments toward developing an NWT anti-poverty strategy!

•          to work collaboratively with ‘Non-Governmental Organizations, Aboriginal governments, business, and others with an interest in poverty’, as recommended in the No Place for Poverty Workshop Report

•             to bring a strategy to the Legislative Assembly before the end of 2012

A Social Envelope Committee, led by a Deputy Minister, will take the lead on the anti-poverty strategy.

See the Premier’s statement in the Legislative Assembly attached or at http://news.exec.gov.nt.ca/what-we-heard-from-northerners-about-poverty/

The Premier also released the results of the GNWT consultation about poverty which took place last spring. This report is attached and available online at http://www.assembly.gov.nt.ca/_live/documents/content/12-02-08TD4-17%282%29.pdf

The report says that people told the government to make wellness, education, housing, job creation, economic development and transitional programs a priority.  People also said better communication and coordination of programs is needed along with more collaboration among agencies.

We are excited and encouraged by these developments and look forward to working with the government on this initiative.
